Flameproof
Contains an internal explosion and prevents it from reaching the surrounding atmosphere.
Increased Safety
Uses additional design margins to prevent sparks or excessive heat.
Non-Sparking
Designed not to ignite gas under normal operating conditions in lower-risk zones.
Pressurized
Maintains clean air or inert-gas pressure to keep the explosive atmosphere outside.
Intrinsic Safety
Limits circuit energy so it cannot ignite a hazardous gas mixture.
Containment and prevention solve different problems.
A flameproof enclosure contains an explosion that occurs inside it. An intrinsically safe circuit limits available energy so ignition cannot begin. Neither method is universally “better”; each belongs to a different engineering problem.
The answer depends on zone, gas group, equipment function and the complete site specification. Matching those inputs is where sound hazardous-area engineering begins.
