01What is a potentially explosive atmosphere?
A mixture of air with flammable gas, vapour or dust at a concentration where a spark or hot surface could ignite it. These conditions are common in oil and gas, chemical and fuel-handling environments.
02What do Zones and Divisions mean?
They classify how often an explosive atmosphere is present. Zone 0, 1 and 2 — or Division 1 and 2 in some standards — determine the protection level required for installed equipment.
03What is the difference between Gas Groups I and II?
Group I covers mining and firedamp applications. Group II covers surface industries and is divided into IIA, IIB and IIC by increasing ignition sensitivity.
04What does Ex d IIB T4 mean?
Ex d identifies flameproof protection, IIB identifies the approved gas group and T4 defines the maximum permitted surface temperature. Together they define where the equipment may be used.
05What does IP65 mean?
Ingress Protection uses two digits: the first covers solids and the second covers water. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets.
06What is ATEX certification?
ATEX is the European framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. It verifies hazardous-area suitability rather than only general electrical safety.
07How is temperature class defined?
By the maximum surface temperature equipment can reach in normal operation, from T1 at 450°C through T6 at 85°C. The surface must remain below the ignition temperature of the surrounding gas.
08Which bodies govern Ex equipment in India?
Key authorities and standards include PESO, BIS and the applicable IS/IEC 60079 requirements. The exact approval requirement depends on the installation and project specification.
09Is PESO or CCOE approval always required?
It is commonly mandatory in classified Indian oil, gas and chemical installations, but requirements should be confirmed for the particular site with the responsible safety authority or engineer.
